We keep track of reference statistics by logging questions from patrons to understand how often and what types of questions people are asking. This helps us see which areas of the library are most used, identify common needs, and improve services. By tracking questions, we can also see if there are gaps in resources or if there’s a need for more help in certain subjects. It’s a way to make sure the library is serving students and staff as best as possible!
You can log reference stats in two ways: on a paper form at the circulation desk or through the online system, LibAnswers through SpringShare. Just make sure you don’t log the same question in both places. You don’t need to track things that are already recorded in Alma, like checking out books, giving out study room keys, or printing, unless a patron asks something like, “How do I check out a book?” or “Can you help me book a study room?”
