To establish the only initiative dedicated to recording, preserving, and providing access to the voices and stories of individuals from Aiken County and surrounding communities. This project will create a lasting archive of local history while offering undergraduate students unique, hands-on opportunities to gain valuable workforce skills in digital archiving, oral history collection, and project management. These experiences will enhance their education and prepare them for various careers.
Since 2021, the USCA Library has been leading efforts to preserve the oral histories of USCA Chancellors, building a foundation of expertise in digital preservation and archival management. Simultaneously, professors from the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences have conducted complementary oral history projects, contributing to a broader understanding of institutional and regional histories.
The Gregg-Graniteville Library is uniquely poised to expand these efforts, leveraging its specialized knowledge in information science and digital archiving to create a unified and accessible repository that will serve as the cornerstone of a digital archive that enriches local history, fosters interdisciplinary research, and ensures these invaluable stories are preserved for the future
