In Fall 2022, HONS 101: Studies in Fanfiction was offered as an interdisciplinary course to first semester freshmen at USC Aiken. Co-taught by an English professor and a librarian, the course focused on critical thinking, analysis, information literacy, research, writing, and examination of primary and secondary texts. Perceptions of participatory fandom and its products, like fanfiction, tend to be negativeor dismissive, but tapping into a person’s interests is an excellent way to deliver and explore content, as well as demonstrate applied information literacy, critical thinking, and academic writing skills. The course culminated in a mock-conference that offered students instruction on and practice in academic research and academic expectations. Students submitted proposals, constructed annotated bibliographies, conducted research, and produced conference-style poster or slide presentations.
