CSE Citation Quick Guide

Coming Soon

The CSE style started in the 1960s as the Council of Biology Editors (CBE) style. It grew to cover many fields of science, and in 2000, the organization became the Council of Science Editors (CSE). Today, the style is known as CSE.

CSE offers three different ways to cite sources.

  1. Citation-Name

    • In-text: Superscript numbers (¹,²,³) mark citations.

    • Reference list: Alphabetized by author. Each source has a number that matches the in-text superscript.

  2. Citation-Sequence

    • In-text: Superscript numbers (¹,²,³) mark citations.

    • Reference list: Numbered in the order the sources appear in your paper (not alphabetical).

  3. Name-Year

    • In-text: Author’s last name and publication year in parentheses (e.g., Smith 2020).

    • Reference list: Alphabetized by author’s last name.

Always, check with your professor to see which way they require.
