Using the Library's catalog, you can find books and ebooks, but it also has the capacity to search across all library collections, including articles in databases. The ability to search across all the Library's resources is convenient, but it also generally produces more results than is manageable. It is generally recommended that you start with the subject-specific databases when looking for articles and that you use the catalog to find books and ebooks. If you've searched the subject-specific databases but still need more articles, then using the Library's catalog can be useful to you.
