Workshops are two-hour short courses on a single topic. They are held from 9:00 until 11:00 am on Friday (dates are shown in the title of the specific workshops below). Upcoming workshops are described below.

Windows Mail (October 2)

This workshop covers the basics of e-mail. This workshop will cover setting up an e-mail account, receiving and sending e-mail, managing your accounts, attaching pictures and files, setting up address books, and other topics aimed at making e-mail a simple, enjoyable means of communication.

Computer Security (October 9)

This presentation will introduce you to the basics of computer security. Viruses, worms, adware spyware, malware, and firewalls are terms that will be explained. You will be introduced to several security systems that are free to use and are very effective.

Computer Maintenance (October 16)

This workshop addresses hard drive maintenance including cleanup, defragmentation, and installation of a new hard drive. We will look at the use of a USB hard drive to back up your data. You will learn how to install RAM and find the correct RAM for your computer. You will also learn how to replace CD/DVD drives and video cards.

Making Address Labels (October 23)

This workshop will show you how to use your computer to make mailing labels for individual cards and letters or for your entire holiday card or party list. You will learn how to set up an address database using MS Works or use MS Word to make extensive lists of names and addresses, and then use the database or list to make address labels. Making return address labels and how to address single envelops will also be discussed.

File Management (October 30)

In this workshop you will learn how to find, save, copy, move, and delete files and folders using Windows Explorer and the Windows Vista task pane. Every program in your computer and every document you write is contained in a “file.” Managing files is one of the most important things to learn in order to use Windows properly.

Internet Shopping (November 6) (CANCELLED)

In this workshop you will learn how to go to various types of sites: Books – Amazon and Barnes and Noble; Airlines – Delta, USAirways, and some of the generic sites; Reservations – Travelocity, Expedia, etc. for airline tickets, rental cars, and hotels. We will also visit regular store sites – Macys, Lands End, etc. We will see how you register on your first visit, select an item to purchase, and go through the steps to supply the merchant with your credit card information. As an added bonus, you can actually make a purchase if you desire.

The Creative Side of Word 2007 (November 13)

This workshop will show you how to use Microsoft Word 2007 to explore often over-looked projects contained in that software—you will create (and modify) a greeting card, design some personal stationery, and develop a simple newsletter.

Travel Planning (November 20)

We will use the Internet for travel planning beginning with initial decisions regarding type of vacation, length, cost, and location. We will cover domestic as well as foreign travel. The workbook exercises will show the student how to book their travel, check on safety, health, government requirements, currencies, weather, and other related issues. A list of numerous information sources will be provided and the students will learn how to discover new ones on their own.

Vista vs. Windows XP (May 1)

This workshop will familiarize you with the features of Windows Vista and Microsoft Office Word 2007 and is for users that are familiar with Windows XP and Word 2003. This workshop is not intended to be a Windows Vista class nor a word processing class using Word 2007. The intent is to introduce the new features of Vista and Word 2007.

Computer Access for the Visually Impaired (February 6)

This workshop will provide information regarding the accessibility features built into Windows XP. We will use the Accessibility Options Control Panel to set options for the Keyboard, Sound, Mouse, Display and General tabs. We will also look at options for high contrast large icon screens. You will be shown how to research accessibility on the Internet and some Microsoft websites covering accessibility in Applications.

Photo Restoration (October 31)

This workshop on digital photo restoration will cover converting your old paper photos into digital form and methods to restore the photos using the Adobe Photo Elements program. Black and white photos, color photos, and coloring black and white photos will be included.

Creating Photo Slideshows (March 6)

Many Photoshop Elements users don’t know much about the built-in set of tools for creating a slideshow from your photographs. We’ll show you how to do this, add music, and then make a DVD that will play on your TV.
