Purpose

Interlibrary Loan serves the research and information needs of the USCA community by providing access to materials not owned or readily available at the Gregg-Graniteville Library. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services are available to USC students, faculty, and staff.

Requesting Material

ILL Express! is the Interlibrary Loan ordering system. This service is accessible through the library’s homepage “on-line forms” or by typing: http://ILL2.tcl.sc.edu/ILLiad/aiken/default.html . First time users must register. Registering entails choosing a password and username which will enable ILL Users to re-access their account to place requests, check the status of their requests, renew materials, and communicate with the ILL office staff through the web browser. Borrowed ILL materials from the USC System campuses are delivered to this library via a System-wide shuttle service. Items must be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

Time Required

A minimum of two weeks should be allowed for receipt of materials. Delivery time may be faster for items located within the USC System, but this cannot be guaranteed. Likewise, materials mailed through the postal system may require a longer delivery period.

Notification

ILL Users are notified by e-mail through ILL Express! Users who do not have an e-mail address will be notified by telephone or regular mail.

Return of Materials

Each lending library determines its due dates of ILL items. Because local processing and delivery time must be considered, due dates on USCA interlibrary loan bands will vary from dates stamped by original lenders. Prompt return of materials to the Circulation Desk is necessary in order to comply with the lending library’s due date.

Renewals

In some circumstances it is possible to request an extension of the loan period. For items borrowed from within the USC System, renewals should be made by the date shown on the interlibrary loan band. Non-USC System renewals must be made at least two days prior to the due date. In all cases, only one renewal may be requested and the decision to grant the renewal rests with the lending library.

Fees

For items borrowed from within the USC System, the only charges are for photocopying. These charges are 10 cents per page. For items borrowed from outside the USC System, the costs vary with the lending libraries. Patrons are responsible for payment of ILL fees incurred as a result of their requests. All fees must be paid at the time materials are picked up.

Limitations

The lending library determines the length of the loan period and whether or not renewals may be granted. The Gregg-Graniteville Library will honor all restrictions of the lending library. The following items are usually not available through ILL:

  • Rare materials, including manuscripts
  • Films from the USC film catalog (ordered individually by Faculty members from the Film Library.)
  • Basic reference materials
  • Reserve materials
  • Serials (except for photocopies)

Charges for Overdue Items and Late Pick-ups

  1. Overdue charges are 25 cents per day with no set maximum and with no grace period. Library holds will be placed for non-returned ILL items. Unpaid fines will be sent to the Finance Office for collection/placement on Accounts Receivable.
  2. A $1.00 late pick-up charge will be assessed for each ILL item that is not picked up within 3 weeks from the date the patron is first notified of its receipt at USCA. This charge will be in addition to any fees incurred during the ILL process.
  3. Unpaid subsystem (non-USC) charges may be sent to Accounts Receivable if they remain unpaid.
  4. If materials are lost, costs will be assessed according to the regulations of the lending library. An additional $5.00 processing fee will be assessed by the USCA Library.
  5. Failure to comply with USCA Interlibrary Loan regulations may result in the loss of ILL borrowing privileges.
