Purpose

Interlibrary Loan serves the research and information needs of the USCA community by providing access to materials not owned or readily available at the Gregg-Graniteville Library. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services are available to USC Aiken students, faculty, and staff.

Information for Faculty

Materials obtained through Interlibrary loans or PASCAL Delivers may not be placed on course reserves. Please plan to purchase (through the Library or on your own), materials needed for course reserves or bring us your personal copy.
For more information, please call the Interlibrary Loan desk at 641–3504.

Requesting Material

ILL Express! is the Interlibrary Loan ordering system. This service is accessible through the library’s homepage at: http://library.usca.edu/Main/HomePage and by clicking on “Interlibrary loans.” First time users must register. Registering entails choosing a password and username which will enable ILL Users to re-access their account to place requests, check the status of their requests, renew materials, and communicate with the ILL office staff through the web browser. Please register only once. Borrowed ILL materials (books and other materials) from the USC System campuses are delivered via the Innovative Courier, Journal articles are delivered electronically to patrons’ web browser.

Time Required

Allow a minimum of a week for receipt of materials. Delivery time may be faster for items located within the USC System, but this cannot be guaranteed. Likewise, materials mailed through the postal system may require a longer delivery period.

Notification

ILL Users are notified by e-mail through ILL Express! Users who do not have an e-mail address will be notified by telephone or regular mail.

Return of Materials

Each lending library determines its due dates of ILL items. Because local processing and delivery time must be considered, due dates on USCA interlibrary loan bands will vary from dates stamped by original lenders. Prompt return of materials to the Circulation Desk is necessary in order to comply with the lending library’s due date.

Renewals

In some circumstances it is possible to request an extension of the loan period. For items borrowed from within the USC System, renewals should be made by the date shown on the interlibrary loan band. Non-USC System renewals must be made at least two days prior to the due date. In all cases, only one renewal may be requested and the decision to grant the renewal rests with the lending library.

Fees

Interlibrary loan services at the Gregg-Graniteville Library are provided free of charge for Faculty, Staff, and Students of USC Aiken.

Dissertations and Theses - ***New*** -

The new “Dissertations and Theses” database from Proquest makes available in full text most dissertations and theses 10 years old or newer. Access this database at: Dissertations and Theses (ProQuest). For more information, please come by the reference desk at the library or call the office at 803–643–6808.

Limitations

The lending library determines the length of the loan period and whether or not renewals may be granted. The Gregg-Graniteville Library will honor all restrictions of the lending library. The following items are usually not available through ILL:

  • Rare materials, including manuscripts
  • Films from the USC film catalog (ordered individually by Faculty members from the Film Library.)
  • Basic reference materials
  • Reserve materials
  • Serials (except for photocopies)

The number of ILL requests (in process) that a USC Aiken patron may order is limited as such:

  • Faculty - 75
  • Staff - 75
  • Undergraduate - 25

Charges for Overdue Items

  1. Overdue charges are $.25 cents per day with no set maximum and with no grace period. Library holds will be placed for non-returned ILL items. Unpaid fines will be sent to the Finance Office for collection/placement on Accounts Receivable.
  2. If materials are lost, costs will be assessed according to the regulations of the lending library. An additional $5.00 processing fee will be assessed by the USCA Library.
  3. Failure to comply with USCA Interlibrary Loan regulations may result in the loss of ILL borrowing privileges.
